How to Start a Handyman Business-Sacrifice

Tuesday, 28 July 2009 05:29 by Denise

Hello,

Today I would like to discuss a topic that I believe is somewhat misunderstood by a lot of people. When you start your handyman business it will take time, usually a lot of time. Which mean you will have to sacrifice doing other things.

When some people realize that they will have to "sacrifice" things in order to start a handyman business, or any business they become discourage and decide that making a "sacrifice" is not worth starting a business.

This is to bad, because if people really understood what it means to "sacrifice" in order to start their handyman business, they would not think of it as a "sacrifice" at all.

So what does sac rife really mean? All it means is that you are going to give up doing something that will not help you reach your goal and start doing things that will. For instance is it really a sacrifice to give up watching as much mindless TV in order to have time to work on your business?

Bob Proctor, a speaker in the personal development field commented that, "Sacrifice was giving up doing something of lower value, for something of higher value."

Think about this statement. Is watching TV going to move you toward your goal of starting a handyman business? (Lower value) Will researching what areas of the handyman business are not being meet in the community help you reach your goal? (Higher value)

Re-thinking how we think about what a sacrifice is will really help you not only start a business, but in everything you wish to accomplish in life.

Good subject Denise.  A couple of yrs ago I left a technology management position that paid pretty well but the demands were too much.  Stress and not spending time with family were my main reasons I left.  After all, I'm no good to my family if my health fails.  I decided to start a handyman business of my own.  This was the best decision I made for me and my family.  There were many sacrifices but worth the challenge.  It's not a rags to riches story for me but in a way it is.  I now spend more time with family and I get lots of excercise.
My sacrifices were yrs of technology training and experience, paid vacation, sick day pay, insurance, 401K, etc.
One thing that I realized early on was that customers were very tenative to hire a handyman because of bad experience(s).  It was a challenge at first but you adjust and build the relationship with you customers.  After listening to countless stories from my customers about some of the handymen and contractors that took advantage of them, and there were many, I took action, I decided to start an organization of handymen and women based out of Maitland, Florida.  The not-for-profit organization certifies a handyman and allows customers to tap into these certified handy professionals and feel confident that they are legitemate.  It also allows  something lacking in our industry, networking with one another.

Everything in life evolves a sacrifice of something else. In your case sacrificing a good paying, but stressful job in order to be at home and have more time for your family was well worth the change. Everyone needs to decide what they truly want out of life and then go for it.

The organization that you have started is something this industry needs more of. Starting a handyman business is hard enough, without getting lumped into the catagory of being a scammer.

When I originally commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added" checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove me from that service?
Thanks!

I thought it was going to be some boring old post, but it really compensated for my time. I will post a link to this page on my blog. I am sure my visitors will find that very useful.
